Struggling Tigers’ reliever Joaquin Benoit will be taken out of the teams setup role. At least for now.

Jim Leyland told Tigers play-by-play man Dan Dickerson this news prior to the Tigers taking on the Blue Jays at Comerica Park Tuesday night. Chris Iott of Mlive.com later mentioned it via his Twitter page.

Benoit has been struggling pretty much all season allowing 12 runs over his last 6 appearances. Benoit signed a hefty contract with the Tigers during the off-season for 3 years at $16.5 million dollars.

According to Rotoworld, Daniel Schlereth or Al Alburquerque could move into the setup role.

I fully expect for Benoit to get himself back into form however this is a perfect example why you don’t hand large contracts to bullpen pitchers.
