Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson and his $4.25 million dollar salary unsurprisingly went unclaimed during the waiver period today so in turn, Detroit assigned him to Grand Rapids.
The good news for Red Wings fans is unless there’s an injury suffered on the line there’s probably little chance Ericsson makes an appearance on the main roster again. And if he does they just send him back down while repeating the process until the end of the season when his contract expires.
As far as cap relief goes, Detroit will get some in the sense of saving around $1.1 million on Ericsson’s AAV. It’s not much obviously but is an added bonus to not have to suffer through Ericsson shifts throughout the rest of the season.
