Angels ace Jered Weaver has dropped his appeal of a six game suspension after throwing at Tigers catcher Alex Avila. He will begin serving his suspension Saturday.
Weaver will be available to pitch again for the Angels next Saturday when Los Angeles visits Toronto.
In his last start, Weaver went nine scoreless innings with a no decision Friday night.
“This just gets the process under way and gets it over with,” Weaver said. “Obviously, this doesn’t help the team out, but it helps the team out as much as possible.”
Major League Baseball handed down the suspension after Weaver threw a 92 mph fast ball over Avila’s head. This was in retaliation to Weaver being upset with Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen for lingering at home plate after hitting home runs.
Weaver has a history or becoming agitated on the mound and throwing at batters. He went on to say that he wouldn’t do anything different last Sunday and that just because he is dropping the appeal doesn’t mean he agrees with the suspension.
Weaver also didn’t hesitate to take a parting shot at Carlos Guillen…
When asked why he chose to throw at Avila and not wait for Guillen next year, Weaver responded by saying…
“Who knows if I’m going to be able to face him again? Is he going to have a job next year?”
Something tells me there are probably more suspensions in Weavers future. Maybe he can become a spokesman for Mydol to make up the lost money in fines?
