The Red Wings’ offense has been a vital part to their success so far this season. In their 18 victories, they’re averaging 4.2 goals per game. However in their ten losses, they’re posting a minuscule 1.3 goals per outing.
In other words, if they’re going to continue to be successful this season, they’ll need to keep the offense going.
Heading into the 2011-12 season, much was made about the Wings being roughly $5.6 million dollars under the cap, setting them up to be major players come the trade deadline. Something that their fans and the rest of the NHL really haven’t been use to since the implementation of the salary cap a few seasons back.
If the Wings do become active at the trade deadline it’s speculated that they will seek a top-six or top-nine forward in which case the Edmonton Journal‘s Jim Matheson writes that “It’s no secret Detroit GM Ken Holland has long been an Ales Hemsky fan.”
Hemsky is slated to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and it would seem likely that the Oilers would like to get something in return for Hemsky while they still can. The Wings may be just the team that Hemsky is looking for to help give him some consistency in his game.
The Wings may also target a defenseman at the trade deadline according to Matheson.
