NBA

The end of an era has arrived.

After 13 seasons, an NBA championship, two MVP awards and countless franchise records, Giannis Antetokounmpo is headed to South Beach.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to trade franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in one of the biggest deals in NBA history.

• 2030 pick swap
• 2033 second-round pick

The trade is expected to become official on July 6.

Miami Lands Its Next Superstar

Heat president Pat Riley has once again landed a franchise-altering star.

Adding Antetokounmpo places Miami firmly back into championship contention. The two-time MVP joins Bam Adebayo, giving the Heat one of the NBA’s best defensive frontcourts and another superstar pairing to build around.

The move joins previous blockbuster acquisitions in franchise history involving LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, Jimmy Butler, and Alonzo Mourning.

Sportsbooks reacted immediately. Miami’s title odds reportedly improved from 30-1 to 18-1 following the news.

Bucks Begin a New Chapter

Milwaukee explored several options, including discussions with the Boston Celtics, before deciding the Heat package provided the best combination of young talent and draft capital.

General manager Jon Horst receives four players all in their 20s while replenishing a future asset cupboard that had become depleted during the team’s championship pursuit.

Herro, a Wisconsin native and 2025 All-Star, becomes one of the centerpieces of the rebuild.

Kel’el Ware averaged 11 points and nine rebounds last season, while Jaime Jaquez Jr. finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting. Former first-round pick Kasparas Jakucionis gives Milwaukee another developmental piece.

The End of a Legendary Run

Few players transformed a franchise like Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Selected with the 15th overall pick in 2013, Antetokounmpo evolved from a raw prospect into one of the greatest players in NBA history.

During his Milwaukee tenure, he accumulated:

• 2 NBA MVP awards
• NBA Finals MVP
• Defensive Player of the Year
• 10 All-Star appearances
• Multiple All-NBA selections
• 2021 NBA Championship

His crowning achievement came in the 2021 Finals, where he averaged 35.2 points and delivered a legendary 50-point performance in Game 6 to secure Milwaukee’s first championship in 50 years.

With his departure, no members of that championship roster remain with the Bucks.

What’s Next?

The Heat suddenly move into the conversation with teams like Oklahoma City, New York and Denver among championship contenders.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee enters a new era under head coach Taylor Jenkins, armed with young talent and significant draft assets.

One thing is certain.

The Giannis era in Milwaukee is over, and the NBA landscape has changed once again.
