Tigers pitcher Doug Fister continues to show why he has been the best deadline acquisition in the entire MLB.

Sunday, Fister and the Tigers completed their third straight sweep and ninth straight win as they defeated the Minnesota Twins 2-1 today from Comerica Park. What may be even more important for the Tigers is all nine of those victories have come over AL Central division opponents.

Doug Fister ended up going 7 innings allowing zero runs on three hits while walking two and striking out five. Although closer Jose Valverde made things interesting in the ninth he was able to close things out recording his 43rd save in as many tries this season. This latest save for Valverde ended up breaking Todd Jones’ team record of 42 set back in 2000.

The Tigers scored all the runs they would need in the in the first inning when Delmon Young (who’s been another great acquisition for the Tigers) had an RBI. The second score for the Tigers came when Victor Martinez grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.

The Tigers now head to Chicago to play the White Sox with their magic number in the single digits.
