Detroit Lions corner Darius Slay whose taken on the nickname (thanks to Twitter) ‘Big Play Slay” may be looking to add another moniker.
How about ‘The Earth’?
Trading barbs with former Lions receiver and current NFL Network analyst Nate Burleson, Slay was asked if he could still cover the 33-year old wide out after yesterday’s Novi High School practice session.
His response was very Darrelle Revis-like.
“I can cover anybody on this planet,” Slay said. “I am The Earth. Call me The Earth.”
As in, bigger than Revis Island?
“I’m The Earth,” Slay said. “But Big Play Earth.”
Slay eventually backed off ‘The Earth’ nickname saying he still wants to go by ‘Big Play Slay’:
“No, my name’s Big Play Slay,” he said. “That’s my nickname. That’s all day, every day. I’m just, ‘Hey, I’m Big Play.’ That’s all I do, I try to make big plays.”
Slay’s coming off a breakout year in 2014 where he had two interceptions in 16 starts… So perhaps he can work himself into that ‘Earth’ nickname.
