One of college basketball’s most decorated coach’s sounds like he’s ready to hang it up after the season.

According to various reports, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski otherwise known as “Coach K” is set to retire after the 2021-22 season with associate head coach Jon Scheyer next in line to take over.

Duke‘s Mike Krzyzewski, the winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball history who has led the Blue Devils to five national championships in his 40 seasons, plans to retire after the 2021-2022 season, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday.

Associate head coach Jon Scheyer has agreed to become the next head coach at Duke, sources told ESPN. He will spend the 2021-2022 season as coach-in-waiting, and take over after that.

Duke talked to outside candidates about replacing Krzyzewski, including Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, sources told ESPN. Scheyer, however, was the lead recruiter on such stars as Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson and is Duke’s choice to replace Coach K, sources said.

That Tommy Amaker item is an interesting one. I’ve never really thought the Harvard head coach would get that kind of consideration from a division one program like Duke noting Amaker’s lack of on-court success at Michigan where he failed to take the Wolverines to the NCAA Tournament in the six season’s he was there.

In any sense, Schyer seems like the right guy to take over factoring in the notable signings these past few seasons.

Coach K has quite the shoes to fill though.

The Naismith Hall of Fame coach has 97 all-time NCAA Tournament wins ranking him No. 1 on the all-time list. He’s also No. 1 on the all-time list for weeks atop the AP Top 25 Poll (126) and is second all-time in NCAA Tournament championships to the legendary UCLA coach John Wooden.
