Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicated today that reliever Joaquin Benoit will return to the setup role today when the Tigers take on the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. This is according to David Mayo of the Grand Rapids Press.

“I think we’ve got to do that,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said this morning, hours before facing the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 1:35 p.m. game at PNC Park. “I’ll probably pitch him in the eighth inning today. If we’ve got the lead, I’m pitching him in the eighth inning. We’ve got to do that.”

Benoit was recently removed from his setup role position after struggling tremendously.

After his demotion, Leyland said that he would like to work Benoit in less stressful situations to get himself back on track. This past Thursday he recorded a 1-2-3 7th inning in Boston during a losing effort.

Detroit’s bullpen struggles have prompted manager Jim Leyland to move Benoit back into the setup role despite wanting to get him more time in those less stressful situations.

“I would’ve liked to have gone a little bit longer,” Leyland said, “but with some of the kids struggling, I’ve got to just hope he gets the job done.”

This season Benoit has a 1-3 record and a a 7.47 ERA in 17 appearances with the Tigers.
