Rumors have been running rampant out of Columbus concerning Urban Meyer becoming the new head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

According to SportsByBrooks.com and ElevenWarriors.com, the former Florida Gators head coach had agreed in principle to take over a Buckeye program that has been marred in controversy the past year.

However despite the rumors that Meyer has agreed to become the head coach of Ohio State, GatorSports columnist Pat Dooley received a text from Meyer denying the reports that he accepted the job.

I can only tell you what Urban just texted me back about rumor that he has accepted job at Ohio State — “No truth to it.” — @pat_dooley via Twitter

Meyer has been a favorite to take over the Ohio State job ever since longtime head coach Jim Tressel was fired prior to the 2011 season amid the memorabilia for tattoo scandal that took the Buckeye football program by storm. Given the high-profile nature of the job and the fact that the NCAA still hasn’t delivered a verdict on the Buckeye’s NCAA violations, Meyer and Ohio State may be delaying an announcement until the NCAA issues are resolved.

Aside from the speculation surrounding Meyer, speculation has started to surface about who may be on Meyers’ staff as outlined by Sports by Brooks and Eleven Warriors.

Of that staff, sources indicate Meyer’s intial plan is to retain current Ohio State head football coach Luke Fickell and current Buckeye wide receivers coach Stan Drayton.

Meyer also aims to add Chris Spielman, Kirk Herbstreit, current North Carolina State linebackers coach Jon Tenuta and current LSU offensive line coach Greg Studwara to his Ohio State staff.

Kirk Herbstreit? I didn’t know he was willing to go back into Columbus…

Meyer resigned from his position with the Florida Gators after the 2010 season. Meyer indicated that the wanted to spend more time with his family as a reason for his departure.

He is currently working for ESPN.
