Could the Tigers bring on Alex Cora or A.J. Hinch as their next manager?
It seems possible according to the team’s general manager Al Avila who said both are on his list to replace Ron Gardenhire who retired the final week of the season.
General manager Al Avila confirmed Friday he will consider A.J. Hinch and Alex Cora for the open Detroit Tigers manager position. Both ex-managers were suspended by MLB through the 2020 postseason for their roles in a sign-stealing, trash can-banging scandal in 2017 with the Houston Astros.
The Astros — with Hinch, 46, as the manager and Cora, 44, as the bench coach — won the World Series that year.
“I have them on my list,” Avila said.
Both are currently serving a season-long suspension for their part in a sign-stealing scandal during their time with the Astros so if Avila is actually serious about the two he won’t be able to contact them until after the conclusion of the World Series which won’t go beyond October 28 at the latest.
In any sense, I would welcome either of these hires and spare fans the nonsense about their part in the cheating scandal. Yeah, the Astros fucking suck for doing it and I will cheer against them for the foreseeable future, but when it comes to Hinch and Cora, they’re some of the few who was actually punished by the League and would have serviced out their penalty.
