Kyle Vanden Bosch restructures deal, gives Lions some cap relief

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Lions veteran defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch agreed to restructure his contract giving the team some cap relief. Vanden Bosch reportedly had his $5 million base salary reduced to the league minimum ($925,000) and took the remaining $4.075 million as a signing bonus.

Brian McIntyre of NFL.com notes that the simple restructure lowers Vanden Bosch’s cap number from $7,667,500 to $4,611,250, giving the Lions a cap savings of just over $3.05 million for the 2012 season.

Furthermore, Birkett highlights that earlier in the week the Lions were roughly $700,000 over the cap. The restructure of KVB’s deal enables the Lions to have some wiggle room to carry a practice squad and make roster moves over the next few months.

Despite the salary cap relieve though this season, next year the restructure increases Vanden Bosch’s 2013 cap number to over $10.6 million. Because of this the Lions may have a big decision to make regarding KVB considering Cliff Avril will also once again be looking for a new deal.
