With Major League Soccer less than one week away from kicking off, the world’s major soccer leagues are nearing the end of their seasons. In Week 27 of the English Premier League, barring the most spectacular fall from grace ever witnessed, Manchester United have all but been given the trophy. After this weekend’s victory at Queens Park Rangers, Manchester United is 12 points ahead of the rest of the table, with six home games out of the remaining eleven matches, and only four of those matches against teams on the top half of the table.
The rest of the major clubs in the English Premier League did fairly well, aside from Chelsea, who lost to Manchester City 2-0, and Everton with a loss to a surprisingly good Norwich City side, 2-1. On the road, Arsenal defeated an Aston Villa club that has taken a turn for the worse and finds itself as a team in the bottom three. Fulham also stays in the hunt to be a top ten team with a goal by Dimitar Berbatov to beat Stoke City 1-0. The Tottenham Spurs won Monday late in the game 3-2 against the home side West Ham United with a stellar finish by their superstar Gareth Bale in the 90th minute.
In La Liga, Barcelona stands tall above the rest with a comfortable 12 point lead above the rest and won 2-1 at home this past weekend against Sevilla with goals by David Villa and Lionel Messi. Surprisingly sitting in third is Real Madrid, winning on the road against Deportivo La Coruna by a score of 2-1. Current second place squad Athletico Madrid beat Espanyol 1-0.
The rest of the major teams around the globe had lots of action this weekend as well. In the Netherlands, Ajax drew ADO Den Haag 1-1 at home, while PSV lost to third place Feyenoord Rotterdam on the road. In the ever famous Inter Milan vs. AC Milan, neither Italian club left with bragging rights as the sides drew level at one goal a piece. Juventus make their presence known as now they are 6 points ahead of Napoli in the Serie A table with a convincing and competitive win over Siena, 3-0. In Germany, Mario Gomez put two goals in as Bayern Munich annihilated the away team Werder Bremen 6-1. David Beckham said it was a perfect day in his debut with the French squad PSG as Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in a 2-0 defeat against Marseille to keep a 3 point cushion between them and Lyon in the race for the French title.
That’s all for this week, but with Champions League matches and the MLS around the corner, there is plenty to be excited for in the soccer world these coming weeks.
Until next time.
