The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl Champions once again after a 25-22 OT win over the San Franciso 49ers Sunday night. It was also probably Kansas City’s most impressive Super Bowl of their three total now over the past five years. Not particularly because they played well because neither team was that impressive. The 49ers held a lead for the majority of the game until Kyle Shanahan rolled the dice and decided to test his luck by giving Patrick Mahomes the final possession with the KC QB knowing a touchdown would win it.
No, the particular win for Kansas City was the most impressive because they this was a down year for the Chiefs.
As weird as it sounds, Kansas City was an underdog in three straight games these playoffs and you’d think for good reason. KC looked very pedestrian during the regular season losing week one against Detroit while going 2-3 during December which included home losses to the Bills in Week 14 and the Raiders in Week 16.
This was the year the NFL was either going to see Josh Allen and the Bills finally get that big win, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens were going to be coronated as the best in the League, or Purdy and the Niners were going to complete their own championship story that adds another heartbreaking chapter of disappointment.
Instead, Patrick Mahomes, like Tom Brady before him did what great quarterbacks always do prove the pundits wrong and make the doubters look silly by betting against them.
That’s not to say Mahomes is giving Brady a run for his money as the “greatest of all time”, yet, Mahomes has further cemented himself as one of the greatest to ever step foot on a football field.
However, don’t look now but Mahomes now has three rings and two MVPs over six seasons, three double-digit Super Bowl comebacks which is good for the most over, and has three Super Bowl MVPs which is now tied for the second most. Combine that with the fact that Mahomes is still only 28 and pretty much just entering his prime and the Chiefs traded away one of Mahomes’ top targets in Tyreek Hill TWO YEARS AGO.
Teams will be better next season, especially those that reside in the AFC West. However, all roads still go through Mahomes and Kansas City and according to them, they’re just getting started.
“Yeah, it’s the start of one. We’re not done. I know we’re gonna celebrate tonight, celebrate at the parade Wednesday in Kansas City, but we’re not done. We’ve got a young team, we’re gonna keep this thing going.” Mahomes said after last night’s win.
