According to sources from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Los Angeles Chargers are scheduled to hold discussions with Jim Harbaugh, the current head coach of the University of Michigan, regarding their vacant coaching position. Harbaugh has reportedly indicated to his associates that he is seriously considering leaving the Wolverines to take on the role of head coach for the Chargers.
Previous reports had already identified Harbaugh as one of the top candidates for the Chargers, who terminated Brandon Staley’s contract in mid-December. The Las Vegas Raiders are also interested in pursuing Harbaugh, who led his alma mater to a national championship this season, as noted by Pelissero and Rapoport. However, interim coach Antonio Pierce is reportedly the frontrunner for the Raiders’ coaching job and has the support of key players.
Michigan is making efforts to retain Harbaugh, and negotiations for a new contract are currently underway. As a college coach, Harbaugh is eligible to interview with NFL teams immediately, as he is not subject to the new rule that prohibits in-person meetings until after the divisional round.
According to Pelissero and Rapoport’s sources, Harbaugh, who previously coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, will not insist on having the authority to hire his own general manager when joining a new team.
However, Harbaugh’s situation is complicated by potential suspensions resulting from ongoing NCAA investigations into allegations of sign-stealing and recruitment violations.
