The former home of the Lions will finally meet its fate.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Pontiac Silverdome will meet the wrecking ball in 2016 in an effort to make the land it currently stands on more attractive to developers.
After opening up in 1975, the Silverdome hosted a number of high-profile events including a mass held by Pope John Paul II, NCAA Tournament regional games, 1994 World Cup games, the 1979 NBA All-Star Game and it came closer to the Super Bowl than the Lions ever will by hosting the big event back in 1982.
It was home to the Detroit Lions from 1975 until 2001 as well as the Detroit Pistons from 1978 to 1988.
As it stands right now, the Silverdome’s roof is gone and according to Robert Mihelich, a vice president at real estate firm CBRE, the stadium has deteriorated due to weather and for the most part looks like it’s in total disrepair.
