According to a reports by Fox’s Peter Schrager and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions and Defensive Tackle Haloti Ngata have agreed on a two year contract just before open season for free agents begins at 4:00 PM ET. Schrager was first to the story by less than a minute.

The money involved or the guaranteed portion of the deal has yet to be disclosed. Assuming the deal isn’t for a huge amount, because his play on the field in 2015 didn’t deserve a top flight salary, this will be yet another solid move by new Detroit Lions General Manager Bob Quinn.

Dave Birkett of the Free Press hinted at this move back on March 3rd, where he said that he expected both sides to come to terms.

The Detroit Lions have just under 10 minutes to get their guys re-signed before they are allowed to sign with anyone else. They have reportedly already lost reserve Linebacker Travis Lewis to a division rival, the Minnesota Vikings.

Haloti Ngata ranked as Pro Football Focus’ 39th best interior defender (term for both 4-3 Defensive Tackles and all three defensive lineman in 3-4 schemes) in the NFL in 2015. His overall rating by PFF for 2015 was a 76.9 and was their seventh best available interior defender in free agency.
