Lions Roundup: Faulk not impressed with Stafford, Lions not interested in overseas game, cap casualties, more

NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk not impressed by Stafford’s 5,000 yard season

Even though Matthew Stafford became only the fourth player in NFL history to throw for over 5,000 yards before the playoffs and do so with a broken finger for three of those games, hall of fame running back and NFL analyst Marshall Faulk isn’t impressed.

Instead, Faulk says that a 5,000 yard season is the normĀ  in today’s NFL.

“Throwing for 5,000 yards in the NFL right now is nothing,” Faulk said. “I don’t want to take anything away from it. As much as people throw the football now, you better have 5,000 (yards) if you have Calvin Johnson.”

I could have seen his point if he said something like Stafford is a number one overall draft pick, this is what he SHOULD be doing but he didn’t. He made it seem like this is what every quarterback in the league should be doing which simply isn’t the case.

Lions not interested in hosting international game

The Lions love the idea of the NFL expanding it’s horizons to other countries and the Lions would be right on board if the league wants them to participate in one of these games.

However, don’t ask them to be the home team in one these games essentially meaning they would give up a game at Ford Field.

“I think the expansion of the NFL into international markets is a great thing, but we don’t look to participate as a home team,” team president Tom Lewand said during a conference call with season ticket holders. “We have a commitment here to Detroit. The Ford family has a commitment to Detroit.”

Calvin Johnson’s contract could kill off Nate Burleson and/or Corey Williams

At this point it seems pretty safe to assume that Calvin Johnson is going to be the highest paid wide receiver in the league. It’s certainly deserving too given the season he had where he often times made opposing secondaries look down right silly. But given the huge contract coming up for Megatron, there is a good chance the supporting type players could become cap casualties.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (via ProFootballTalk.com) says that two of these potential casualties could be receiver Nate Burleson and/or defensive tackle Corey Williams.

Randy Moss to Detroit?

When Randy Moss announced that he was going to attempt a comeback in the NFL I knew the Randy Moss to Detroit talk would emerge given Scott Linehan’s presence on the coaching staff.

Here’s what Mark Craig of the Star Tribune has to say on the subject…

Moss had a good relationship with Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan when they were together in Minnesota. Moss said he doesn’t have to be the No. 1 receiver (that’s nice of him), so he could pair up with former Vikings teammate Nate Burleson as complementary receivers to Calvin Johnson.

  • New Lions defensive assistant Marcus Robertson says the three reasons why he came to Detroit are Jim Schwartz, Matthew Stafford and the defensive line.
  • After being named the league’s most overrated player if front of Tim Tebow, Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will be the Grand Marshall of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR event.
  • Matthew Stafford is scheduled to make an appearance at Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game Awards.
