Maryland may have contacted Rich Rod during bowl practices

According to a report by the Detroit News, University of Maryland officials may have contacted Rich Rodriguez during bowl practices when he was the head coach of the University of Michigan.

The story that originally came from the Baltimore Sun, says it confirmed that Maryland or it’s representatives had contact with Rich Rodriguez at some point this past December while Michigan was in Jacksonville preparing for the Gator Bowl. Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson did not confirm with whom he met while in Jacksonville.

Jeff Barker, a reporter for the Sun wrote in his blog on Tuesday that he received 25 pages of documents requested under the state’s public records law.

“There sure was a burst of activity in a limited time — more than I had known. I had figured representatives went to Dallas to interview SMU coach June Jones and to the Auburn area to talk to offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. “I didn’t know about the trip to Jacksonville, which was something of a mystery. It turns out that Michigan was preparing for the Gator Bowl at the time (Dec. 27) Maryland representatives visited Jacksonville. Michigan was then coached by Rich Rodriguez. Do I know for certain that Rodriguez was the target of the Jacksonville trip? Nope. But I do know Rodriguez was contacted by Maryland reps at some point during the search. You can’t say Maryland didn’t consider some big names. Ultimately, there was a comfort level with Randy Edsall.”

Rodriguez was fired in early January after a less than stellar 3 year stint with the University of Michigan where he went 15-22. Rodriguez has indicated that he plans on taking 2011 off from coaching before returning in 2012.
