One group that I wouldn’t want to be part of, at least this morning, is the Detroit Red Wings.
Why you ask?
Well this team, probably at this very moment, is suffering the wrath of their head coach Mike Babcock after last nights embarrassing 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators at the Joe Louis Arena.
According to George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press, Babcock had plenty so say regarding his teams play, not only last night but as of late.
“It’s absolutely unacceptable to compete like we did,” Babcock said after the Wings fell behind, 2-0, in the first period, 4-0, in the second. “You’re not going to be successful in anything, any walk of life, working (like that). Beyond ridiculous!
“Obviously, we’ve got tons of work to do. I thought we were coming out of what we’re in, but obviously we’re not. So, we’ll have to get to work in practice tomorrow.”
And proof that today’s morning practice is going a bit on the tough side…
We’re not going to work in games? You can bet we’ll work in practice,” Babcock said. “We’re going to get some work ethic back, because there’s no way we’re going to have 22,000 people watching us play like that. That’s absolutely unacceptable.”
“We’re awful,” Babcock said.
Babcock still doesn’t place too much blame on starting goalie Jimmy Howard who was pulled last night after giving up 4 goals on 16 shots.
“I haven’t been through each goal, but I know when two guys are behind the net and three guys are behind the net and they’re shooting into an empty net, it’s probably not anything to do with the goaltenders,” Babcock said. “We weren’t good enough tonight. Obviously, we’re not prepared mentally to play and to compete at a high-enough level.”
As guys start to come back for the Wings you would assume their play would get better. However when they do lose it’s normally because they constantly give up the puck in their own zone or spend too much time passing when they should be shooting.
The Wings are going to be fine up until playoff time, however if these same problems don’t get fixed we may be in for a short playoff run.
