Novak Djokovic cemented his #1 world ranking by defeating the defending Wimbledon Champion Rafeal Nadal 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in Sunday’s Wimbledon final.
Djokovic secured his first Wimbledon victory and continued his dominance over Nadal beating him now in five straight head to head matches.
After shaking hands with Nadal, Djokovic went to the back court, knelt down and pulled a piece of grass from the finely manicured court and put it in his mouth.
“It’s really hard to describe this with any words except the best day of my life, most special day of my life,” said Djokovic, who tossed three of his rackets into the crowd before accepting the championship trophy. “This is my favorite tournament, the tournament I always dreamed of winning. The first tennis tournament I ever watched in my life.”
On the Women’s side of things, Petra Kvitova upset Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 capturing her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon on Saturday.
Even though this was Kvitova’s first major final appearance she was calm and collected. It was Sharapova who was a little on edge double faulting six time times, including twice to get broken to 4-2 in the first set.
“It’s hard to find some words if I’m standing here with the trophy and see the great players in the Royal Box,” Kvitova said. “Well, I’m so happy that I won.”
