After not suspending Ndamukong Suh, the NFL announced Wednesday that they would fine the Lions DT $30,000 dollars for his kick to the groin of Texans quarterback Matt Schaub during last Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game from Ford Field.

During his weekly meeting with the media on Wednesday, Suh said the kick was unintentional due to his awkward fall when being dragged down. Suh also mentioned that he wouldn’t apologize to Schaub because what happened is all part of the game.

The NFL however thought otherwise and decided to slap Suh with the hefty fine yet the NFL’s actions once again raise questions as to their logic behind the punishments handed out.

After the incident happen, the NFL was steadfast in issuing a statement that the play itself definitely caught their attention and that they would review video footage of it. As late as yesterday NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated that it was difficult for the League to determine as to whether or not Suh intended to kick Schaub let alone in the groin.

“Intent is something that is very difficult for us to ever try to make a judgment on,” Goodell told reporters before speaking at a Lions charity event Tuesday night.
“They’re still going through the process of whether it should be a fine,” Goodell said. “They’ll probably make that decision in the next couple days.”
I’ve mentioned before that I do believe Suh intentionally tried to kick Schaub but not necessarily in the groin like the video showed. However if the NFL had found itdifficultto find intent on the play then why make the public announcement that their would be no suspension only to eventually issue a fine based on those same uncertainties? Not to mention after last year’s stomping incident during the Thanksgiving Game against Green Bay (where Suh was issued a two game suspension) the League stated that they would deal with repeat offenders much more harshly. However Suh’s $30,000 fine this time around was a much more lenient of a punishment than that two game suspension he received last season.
Now I am in no way sorry for Suh in this case. He makes more than enough money to deal with this fine. Yet this is just another example of the inconsistencies surrounding the NFL that seem to be not only persistent on the field with the officials but in the league offices as well.
