Zumaya will skip surgery in hopes of playing this season

According to Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com, Tigers’ reliever Joel Zumaya has opted against surgery after talking with orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, team orthopedist Stephen Lemos and Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand.

“If he’d had exploratory surgery and corrective surgery now,” said Rand, “it would’ve given him a remote chance of pitching in 2010.”

This may be the most frustrating time for Zumaya considering he is a free agent after this season and he is still feeling pain in his elbow after tests couldn’t determine where the pain is coming from.

Zumaya, who has already been put on the 60 day DL will have six weeks of rest again before throwing. Rand also indicated that if he is still feeling pain after six weeks he (Zumaya) will opt for the surgery.
