Yzerman named a finalist for the NHL’s general manager of the year

According to Tom Leyden of the WXYT Detroit, the NHL has named former Detroit Red Wings captain and current Tampa Bay Lighting GM Steve Yzerman as a finalist for the NHL general manager of the year.

Yzerman who spent his entire career playing for the Red Wings worked as a vice president under Red Wings general manager Ken Holland from 2006-2010. He also took the reins of general manager for Team Canada in the 2010 Olympics where he constructed a team that went on to win the gold medal.

Amidst their ownership changes, Yzerman was hired as the GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning back in May of 2010. In his first year as the Tampa Bay general manager, Yzerman had the Lightning compile a record of 46-25-11 and 103 points in the Southeast Division. This was a 23 point improvement from the previous season and marked the second best record in franchise history.

The other finalists for the award is Vancouver GM Mike Gillis and Nashville GM David Poile.
