The NHL is currently finalizing the details to hold the 2013 Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Scott Burnside of ESPN.com however writes that in the midst of the Winter Classic being finalized to be held at The Big House, the NHL is also looking to add a second rink in Downtown Detroit to host all ancillary events.

If there was to be a second rink added, it would more than likely be housed at Comerica Park.

Burnside further writes that the NHL is looking to include second rink in order to better include the city of Detroit which is the location of the home venues for the Wings and Tigers, two teams that Mike Ilitch owns.

The NHL would also look to add new events to the Winter Classic festivities.

This past Winter Classic at Citizen’s Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia had an alumni game as well as an American League Hockey game bundled in a package with Winter Classic tickets. Burnside states that similar idea is being considered for the Winter Classic in Detroit/Ann Arbor. There were also different hockey and public events held at the rink which would also be considered for the downtown rink.

One of the more intriguing ideas though for the downtown rink is having it host the Great Lakes Invitational featuring Michigan, Michigan State and other top college teams from around the country. This event usually takes place at the Joe Louis Arena.
