On Monday, TSN.ca reported that the Ottawa Senators have hired Red Wings assistant coach Paul MacLean and will introduce him at a press conference on Tuesday.
MacLean becomes the 9th head coach of the Senators since coming back to the NHL during the 1992-93 season. He is also the second head coach to leave Detroit this off-season after Brad McCrimmon decided to leave the team and take a head coaching position in the KHL.Not to mention the Wings loose a guy with one of the best mustaches currently in hockey.
In addition to the roster, MacLean’s move on Monday is just another area that the Wings will have to fill this off-season. Now a lot of fans out there may be thinking that it’s just an assistant coaching position, no big deal. However assistant coaches often times are in charge of different aspects of the game including the power play, penalty kill, 4 on 4, etc. So it’s still pretty vital that they find the right two guys to fill those positions.
According to Ansar Khan of Mlive.com, candidates to fill the vacant assistant coaching positions include former NHL head coaches Pete DeBoer, Todd Richards and Gerard Gallant as well as former Windsor Spitfires head coach Bob Boughner.
