The Wings’ offense keeps on rolling as they lay a pounding on the Winnipeg Jets 7-1 Saturday night from the Joe.
Two nights after facing the old Winnipeg Jets, the Wings were able to open things up against the new Winnipeg Jets in the second period when Detroit was able to get four goals by Ondrej Pavelec who was eventually pulled in the third.
Winnipeg, whose been on a roll lately opened the scoring up when Bryan Little was able to capitalize off of a Wings giveaway at center ice to put the Jets up 1-0 thirty seconds into the game.
Not too long after that Detroit’s Todd Bertuzzi was able to tie things up before Henrik Zetterberg put the Wings on top 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
If was downhill from there for Pavelec and the Jets as Hudler, Conner, Filppula and Miller each scored goals in the second putting the Wings up 6-1 on the Jets after 40 minutes of play. Filppula’s goal was especially pretty after Pavel Datsyuk fed the red-hot forward with a no look pass in the Winnipeg corner.
Hudler added one more in the third period (his second of the night) as the Wings finished off the Jets, picking up where they left off in 1996.
The Majors Detroit Player of the Game: Jiri Hudler
Hudler is looking more and more like the player he was before he left for the KHL after the 2008-09 season. Often the center of trade speculation the Wings may want to reconsider any thoughts they have of trading Hudler if he keeps this pace.
The Majors Detroit Zero of the Game: ???
It was another rock solid night for the Wings. Howard looked very good, the defense looked good and the offense was rolling yet again. If anything the Winnipeg Jets defense left Pavelec out to dry on many occasions tonight.
Looking Ahead: Pittsburgh Penguins
After tonight the Wings hit the road to take on Eastern Conference rival Pittsburgh. As of tonight Pittsburgh is 17-9-4 and look every bit a Stanley Cup contender. There are however questions surrounding the health of Sidney Crosby as he once again has been sidelined after having a collision with his own teammate the other night. There’s no question Crosby makes the Penguins a better team however they are still very dangerous without him and the Wings will definitely need to bring their A game to the Consol Energy Center Tuesday night.
The Bottom Line
You really cannot say enough about the Wings’ offense these past couple of games. They are getting contributions from everyone and have limited the oppositions scoring. One thing however that is concerning is the giveaways as Winnipeg’s lone goal tonight came as a result of some poor puck possession from the Wings.
