Steven Stamkos may find himself with a new team sooner rather than later.
According to SportsNet’s Chris Johnston who cites reports out of Tampa Bay saying Stamkos will possibly waive his no-trade clause prior to the NHL trade deadline coming up February 29th.
Stamkos is on his way to becoming the most sought after free agent this coming offseason. Currently the Tampa Bay Lighting captain is in the final year of a five-year contract with a cap hit of $7.5 million per year.
A consistent 20-goal scorer including a 60 goal tally in 2012 and 43 goal tally in 2015, Stamkos’ next deal could very well eclipse the $10 million dollar mark as teams line up their own financial situations to potentially make a run at the 25-year old. As recently as this week, the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are widely considered to be a potential landing spot for Stamkos traded away their captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators to potentially clear cap space for the Lightning forward come the offseason.
