Why the Lions didn’t have a QB at rookie minicamp turns into the question, why didn’t they draft one this year? Dan Campbell explains…

The Lions ran their rookie minicamp over the weekend and there was one notable absence aside from first-round pick Penei Sewell who was unable to participate due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

That absence was a quarterback.

That’s right, the Lions ran a minicamp without a QB being in attendance, however, Lions head coach Dan Campbell explains why this was.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell, addressing the media ahead of Sunday’s final minicamp session, explained the reasoning and how drills were conducted, with coaches stepping up when called upon.

“We like the three quarterbacks we have on our roster right now,” Campbell said. “We feel like we’re in a good spot there. We would have had to sign a tryout player at quarterback. There’s nothing wrong with that to get through a practice.”

He added, “Why waste one of those spots on somebody that we knew wasn’t going to be here? We would rather use one of those spots and let’s bring in a tight end, let’s bring in a defensive back. Let’s get eyes on somebody we think can make this roster. And so, we’ve got some coaches on this staff that actually can throw a little bit. So, we’ve used their arms somewhat. I would say this — there’s been a lot of ice, a lot of icing after practice, been a lot of heat pre- practice. We’re getting it done, and they look pretty good.”

It’s not just the immediate question of “why isn’t there a QB at minicamp” that Campbell addresses. By extension, the Lions head coach also pretty much confirmed why the team didn’t take a QB in the draft. Obviously, you can’t really have a QB at rookie minicamp if you don’t have a rookie on the roster. Apparently, that’s because, as Campbell said, the team is perfectly happy with who they have on the roster right now which is Jared Goff, Tim Boyle, and second-year player David Blough.

And this is fine. Because of what Brad Holmes did this offseason, the Lions didn’t need to take a QB this draft. They had options and they’re taking advantage of those options. Because I say this, is there any Lions fan out there that was completely sold on any QB this past draft that wasn’t named Trevor Lawrence?
