Even though the non-waiver trade deadline in the MLB has passed, teams can still make moves via the waiver wire. Typically players with high-priced contracts get put on waivers to ensure that they won’t get claimed by any other teams while on waivers. Once they clear, they can then be traded to any other team in the league.
Players who could find themselves on other teams via a waiver trade include Houston Astros outfielder Carlos Lee and left-hander Wandy Rodriguez, who have large salaries attached. Other possibilities include San Francisco’s Aaron Rowand, and a bunch of role players, such as Seattle’s Adam Kennedy, Oakland’s Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Kansas City’s Bruce Chen.
Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano and right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano could also be potential candidates to be traded via waivers. However it is unclear at this point whether or not the Cubs would absorb a large portion of their contracts to create a market for them.
