The Japanese women’s team is going to get a chance to defend their 2011 World Cup Championship in the finals, ironically against the United States thanks to an unlikely scenario.
In stoppage time and tied 1-1, England’s Laura Bassett unintentionally sent the ball into her own goal in an attempt to break up a Japanese cross.
As harsh as it sounds it was really a remarkable play in all of the worst set of circumstances, time, setting and the fact that this will probably haunt Bassett for the rest of her life. Trust me I take nothing from that but damn… saying tough break is an understatement.
