Jason Collins became the first openly gay player to play in the one of the four major professional North American sports when he checked in at the beginning of the 2nd quarter against the Lakers tonight.
Collins, who signed a 10-day contract with the Nets today announced publicly last April that he was in fact gay setting up history to be made tonight.
However, Collins’ entrance into the game was pretty nonchalant. Fans weren’t boisterous (probably because it was in LA), players went about their business and the announcers made little mention despite the media attention leading up.
Collins opened some doors, broke a barrier but in the end he was just another NBA player like the other 9 guys out on the court.
