While Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder maintains that the team’s name “Redskins” is a ‘badge of honor” and proclaiming that he’d never change the name, the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation paid for a television ad to run in seven major markets denouncing the name of the Washington NFL team name.
The ad itself according to For the Win is a 60-second version of the longer video created by the National Congress of American Indians. The ad is scheduled to run in Washington, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Sacramento and San Francisco while previously making its way to television screens this past Sunday in Miami during halftime of the NBA Finals game.
Within the ad, one of the more power statements comes in the end when the narrator states, “Native Americans call themselves many things. The one thing they don’t …” after this only a Washington Redskins football helmet is shown.
This ad should also continue to put to bed any absurd argument from those who actually believe Native American’s are honored by Washington’s NFL namesake. Not to mention any asinine attempt by Daniel Snyder (or the NFL for that matter) to make claim that the name isn’t inherently racist.
