Tigers manager Jim Leyland picked up his 500th win with the Tigers and Justin Verlander picked up his 21st win of the season as the Tigers took game one of their weekend series with the White Sox 8-1 from Comerica.
Verlander had a bounce back game of sorts after giving up 4 runs to the Twins in his previous start. Tonight he managed to go 7 1/3 giving up only one run on seven hits while walking 1 and striking out six. He also becomes the first Tigers pitcher to get 21 wins since their last true ace Jack Morris dis so during the 1986 season.
In addition to Verlander’s continued dominance Austin Jackson continues to swing a hot bat going 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and homered for the second consecutive game. He also stretched his hitting streak against the White Sox to 13 games and has gone 23-for-62 (.371) against them with three doubles, a triple, three homers and eight RBIs during the streak. This is according to Brian VanOchten of the Grand Rapids Press.
