Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander and catcher Alex Avila have been named to the Sporting News 2011 American League All-Star team.
Verlander who finished the regular season with a 24-5 record and a 2.40 ERA was named the team’s starting pitcher and was the only unanimous for the American League team. Verlander also went 2-1 in the playoffs with a 5.31 ERA.
In addition to this selection, Verlander is also expected to win the AL Cy Young Award next month.
Avila was selected after hitting .295 on the season with 19 home runs and 82 RBIs.
Twenty-six front-office executives took part in the voting for the AL team.
