In a seemingly clockwork methodology to his coaching cycle, Urban Meyer will announce during a 2 pm presser from Columbus today that the Rose Bowl will be his last game with Ohio State before retiring.
Urban Meyer addressed Ohio State team this morning.
I'm told room was quiet and collectively shocked.
Some key staff members were told they will be retained under new HC Ryan Day.
Guys like strength coach Mickey Marotti & Asst AD Player Personnel Mark Pantoni are vital to program— Marty Smith (@MartySmithESPN) December 4, 2018
Yahoo Sports was one of the many outlets to break the news of Meyer’s decision and the announcement that 39-year-old offensive coordinator Ryan Day will take over as head coach on January 2nd. Day as you may know coached the team the first three games of the season while Meyer served his suspension for failing to take any action over his former wide receivers coach Zach Smith beating the shit out of his former wife.
Whether or not the scrutiny Meyer has faced this season of the Smith fallout contributed to his decision to step down is unclear however it’s hard to look past the similarities between his decision to leave Ohio State and his decision to leave Florida. With the Gators it was ‘chest pains’ and wanting to ‘spend more time with his family’ which lasted about the time it takes to cook an egg before we ultimately saw him on TV with ESPN and eventually accepting a head coaching job with the Buckeyes. Of course then there was all the Aaron Hernandez fallout that occurred which stretched all the way back to his days in Gainesville with the Gators and Meyer as his head coach.
Now with Ohio State it’s a cyst and stress coming off the widely publicized mishandling of the Zach Smith fiasco.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
