The U.S. Women’s soccer team is certainly gaining the attention of the nation, especially after today.
Down 2-1 late in the second half the U.S. Women miraculously were able to tie Brazil off of a beautiful header from Abby Wambach in the 122nd minute.
After this, U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo took over.
Solo was able to Brazil’s third kick, from defender Daiane, and when American defender Ali Krieger sealed the deal for the Americans with their third and final attempt on penalty shots, the U.S. were on their way to the final four of the World Cup.
“Somebody’s writing this book. And it’s something about the American attitude and finding a way to win,” U.S. coach Pia Sundhage told ESPN as the U.S. team was celebrating on the field.
“I’m honored to be here. This is the World Cup. Unfortunately, Germany’s knocked out but we believe we can win this tournament,” Wambach said. “Coming back from a goal down in overtime, then going to penalties, I don’t know if you can write a better script.”
The U.S. (2-1-1) now seem to be the favorites to win their third title. They will now go on to face first time semifinalist France (2-1-1) on Wednesday. The winner of this matchup will go on to face either Sweden (4-0-0), the 2003 runner-up or a very surprising team in Japan (3-1-0) who managed to shock the two-time champion Germany on their home soil.
