U-M point guard Trey Burke a nominee for the 2012 Bob Cousy Award

Michigan freshman point guard Trey Burke has certainly made a big impact for the Wolverines his first season in Ann Arbor, however it looks like he’ll be getting that national attention.

It was announced Monday that Burke would be named one of the 60 finalists for the 2012 Bob Cousy Award which is presented annually by the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame to the country’s top point guard.

Through 11 games, Burke is averaging 13.1 points and 4.7 assists. He is No. 2 on the team in minutes played, averaging 32.7 minutes. He has also been named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week twice this season thus far.

The original list of 60 candidates will be narrowed down to 20 by January 1st and again to a final 10 by February 1st. The final five will be announced on March 1st and the winner of the award will be unveiled at the Final Four in New Orleans.
