Here are some various news and noteworthy items from Kyle Meinke of AnnArbor.com

  • Fitz Toussaint will remain the starting tailback next weekend when the Wolverines take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish under the lights at Michigan Stadium. Toussaint managed to impress head coach Brady Hoke enough to keep that job. Michael Shaw is expected to be the backup even though Hoke is still using the term “co-starter”.
  • The offense remains a mystery for the Wolverines considering they only ran 39 plays during their rain shortened match up against the Broncos.
  • Backup sophomore QB Devin Gardner was expected to get snaps at the end of the game against Western. That obviously didn’t happen because of the severe weather that ended up suspending the rest of the game permanently. Gardner has only taken 17 career snaps.
  • Could there be a position battle at linebacker for the Wolverines? Redshirt freshman linebacker Jake Ryan started at strong-side linebacker against Western after Cam Gordon was scratched because of a bad back. Brady Hoke said that Gordon would be listed ahead of Ryan on next weeks depth chart however that doesn’t necessarily mean the job is Gordon’s straight up. “This is a weekly, everyday battle,” Hoke said. “We’ll see. How did he do? He did some good things, and then he needed to do a couple of things better. It’s like our whole team.”
  • Despite Notre Dame’s QB problems, Brady Hoke says that won’t affect how his team prepares for them next weekend.
  • Corner Troy Woolfolk is expected to play next weekend against Notre Dame despite straining his ankle on kickoff coverage against Western Michigan.
