The Detroit Tigers will be without one of their emerging young arms to begin the 2026 season.
Right-hander Troy Melton is dealing with a right elbow strain and is not expected to be ready for Opening Day. The organization is taking a cautious approach, opting for extended rest rather than pushing him back into action early in the year.
Melton has not appeared in a Grapefruit League game this spring due to elbow soreness. Team officials have emphasized that the priority is long-term health, not rushing him back for early regular season innings.
The 25-year-old made significant strides in 2025, posting a 2.76 ERA across 45.2 innings at the major league level. He also earned a postseason start, solidifying himself as part of Detroit’s pitching depth entering this season.
His absence early will test that depth.
Detroit’s rotation picture already includes established names at the top, but Melton was viewed as a valuable swing arm capable of starting or contributing in multi-inning relief. Without him available, the Tigers will need to lean on other internal options while he works his way back.
There is no announced timetable beyond missing the start of the season, and the club has not indicated any structural damage beyond the strain. Updates are expected as he progresses through rest and rehabilitation.
For now, the Tigers will proceed cautiously with a pitcher they believe is part of their future.
