Jim Tressel is heading to the NFL.
The Indianapolis Colts announced Friday that they have hired the former Ohio State head coach as a game day consultant meaning he will help the team try to determine whether or not they should challenge plays. Indianapolis head coach Jim Caldwell said this is a position he was looking to fill for the past couple years.
“He’s a guy I have known for quite some time and have a good relationship with,” Caldwell said during a conference call. “We have hired him as a game-day consultant. He was around last night and will be working with us next week.”
It’s not clear the connection between Caldwell and Tressel however it’s assumed the two crossed paths on the recruiting trail during the 1980’s and early 90’s.
It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of action NFL commissioner Roger Goodell takes with the Tressel hiring in Indianapolis. As you may remember Goodell suspended now Oakland QB Terrell Pryor for his actions during the NCAA investigation at Ohio State that Tressel himself obviously was very much involved in. Even though Tressel is going to be up in the booth and will basically have zero impact on the coaching of the team, some type of disciplinary action towards Tressel or the Colts is warranted given what happened to Pryor.
