The Detroit Tigers spent much of the weekend within a hit or an out of winning. They left Cleveland with one victory in four games.
All three losses ended on walk-offs, including Sunday’s 3-2 defeat in 10 innings. Now Detroit returns to Comerica Park for a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins, beginning Monday at 3:10 p.m. ET. The Tigers send Troy Melton to the mound for the opener.
Detroit needs more offense after another missed opportunity
Sunday’s loss followed a familiar pattern: Detroit scored early, stayed close and watched Cleveland celebrate.
Riley Greene drove in both Tigers runs with a first-inning double. Detroit went scoreless the rest of the afternoon before Daniel Schneemann delivered the winning single in the 10th. Cleveland’s third walk-off of the weekend capped another frustrating finish for Detroit.
The late innings deserve attention, but so does everything before them. Two runs leave little room for a pitching mistake. Detroit needs more hitters contributing throughout the game, especially after the first trip through the order.
Troy Melton faces a tough rematch
Troy Melton enters Monday at 7-4 with a 2.20 ERA, though Minnesota has given him trouble.
The Twins have hit six home runs in 10⅓ innings across his two starts against them. His recent struggles extend beyond this matchup, with a 4.84 ERA over his last four starts, according to Bless You Boys.
Keeping Minnesota in the ballpark would give Detroit a better chance to play from ahead. Melton’s season has offered plenty of reasons for encouragement. Monday brings a chance to make an adjustment against a lineup responsible for some of his roughest outings.

Minnesota arrives after a lopsided loss
The Twins had a rough Sunday of their own.
Minnesota lost 10-1 to the Chicago White Sox, with Brooks Lee’s solo home run providing its only scoring. Chicago pulled away over the final innings to take the deciding game of the series.
Detroit enters Monday 65-78, three games behind 68-75 Minnesota.
For the Tigers, a home series against a team directly ahead of them offers a chance to gain ground. After Cleveland, the immediate goal is less complicated: score enough to give the pitching staff some room and finish a game without letting a lead slip away.
