Using 117 pitches to mow down the Mariners, Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull became the fifth pitcher this season to record a no-hitter as Detroit blanked Seattle 5-0 Tuesday night.
Turnbull also becomes the eighth pitcher in Tigers history to throw a no-no and the first since 2011 when Justin Verlander threw his second with the team.
Unfortunately for the Mariners, this is the second time this season they’ve been on the losing end of a no-hitter after Baltimore Orioles ace John Means held Seattle hitless back on May 5. Additionally, after Turnbull and Means, San Diego Padres righty Joe Musgrove, Chicago White Sox lefty Carlos Rodon, and Cincinnati Reds veteran Wade Miley are the other three pitchers to record no-hitters so far this year.
As far as last night though, the 28-year-old Turnbull recorded nine strikeouts on his way to history. The only baserunners allowed were Jarred Kelenic who reached on a leadoff walk in the fourth and a fielder’s choice in the ninth as well as Jose Marmolejos who reached on a leadoff walk to start the ninth inning.
Pitchers this season are on their way to breaking the all-time mark for no-hitters in a year (8) set all the way back in the 1884 season. Seven no-hitters have been recorded in the modern-day happening in three separate seasons in 1990, 1991, and 2015.
