Tigers send reliever Ryan Perry to Triple-A Toledo

Following the Tigers’ 6-3 loss Friday night against the Boston Red Sox, the team sent struggling reliever Ryan Perry to Triple-A Toledo to work on some issues.

“Right now we’re just beating ourselves up. We are and so is Ryan, and he knows that,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “He just needs to get away from this atmosphere, hopefully temporarily, and get it going again, get his stuff straightened out in a little more relaxed atmosphere.”

In addition to Perry being sent down was the fact that the Tigers had to make room on their big league roster for LHP Andy Oliver who will start Saturday against the Red Sox. So this was a move that could be foreseen based on how Perry has played so far this season and Oliver being called up.

According to Chris Iott of Mlive.com, Perry has allowed 13 earned runs and 15 hits in just 7 1/3 innings pitched and his earned run average has climbed from 3.00 to 14.04 during that time.

“I just think he needs to get away from it up here,” Leyland said. “He’s frustrated. So I think it’s without question the best thing for him and hopefully in the long run – not too much of the long run – us, too.”
