The growing tension between the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners spilled onto the field Wednesday night after Mariners reliever Gabe Speier hit Gleyber Torres with a pitch during the eighth inning.
Both benches and bullpens emptied as Torres exchanged words with Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh, adding another heated chapter to a matchup shaped by last season’s American League Division Series and a testy June series in Detroit.
No punches were thrown, and the confrontation ended without a larger altercation. Umpires ejected Speier and Mariners manager Dan Wilson, ruling the pitch intentional.
The incident provided the defining moment of Seattle’s 4-2 victory, which snapped Detroit’s four-game winning streak.
A NIGHT FILLED WITH HIT BATTERS
The tension built throughout a game in which five batters were hit by pitches.
Seattle starter Bryan Woo hit three Tigers during seven scoreless innings. Rookie Max Clark was struck on his elbow guard in the third, while Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry were hit by breaking pitches in the fourth and fifth.
McKinstry initially remained at the plate before replay review determined the pitch had struck him.
None of the three Tigers scored.
Woo escaped each jam while allowing three hits and one walk with five strikeouts. He became the first MLB pitcher since Yu Darvish in 2022 to throw seven scoreless innings while hitting three batters.
The right-hander improved to 7-0 at T-Mobile Park this season.
CAL RALEIGH HIT BEFORE TORRES INCIDENT
The complexion changed when Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesus hit Raleigh in the ribs with a 94-mph fastball leading off the bottom of the seventh.
The pitch came with two strikes, and Detroit catcher Eduardo Valencia insisted there was no intent behind it.
“We’re trying to throw up and in all series to Cal,” Valencia said. “We don’t try to hit anybody.”
Valencia said De Jesus missed his intended location while trying to record an out.
Speier entered for Seattle in the eighth and retired his first two batters. He then threw consecutive fastballs inside to Torres. The first forced Torres away from the plate. The second struck him around the left quadriceps.
Torres immediately looked toward Raleigh and began talking as he walked toward first base.
TORRES BELIEVES SEATTLE RETALIATED
Torres said after the game that he believed Seattle intentionally hit him in response to Raleigh being struck one inning earlier.
“I guess they protected Raleigh,” Torres said. “I don’t think we hit Raleigh on purpose. But that’s baseball. That’s their guy, and I know they try to protect him.”
Raleigh stood and faced Torres as the conversation continued. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch attempted to pull Torres away before players poured onto the field from both dugouts and bullpens.
Torres said he had no personal dispute with Raleigh and had tried to explain that De Jesus did not hit the Seattle catcher intentionally.
“I don’t try to fight with nobody,” Torres said. “I’m not that type of guy. It is what it is. It’s all good.”
Torres also described the pitch as a relatively professional form of retaliation because Speier struck him below the waist instead of throwing near his head.
UMPIRES EJECT SPEIER AND WILSON
Following a conference, the umpiring crew determined Speier’s pitch carried enough intent to warrant an immediate ejection.
Wilson was also thrown out while arguing the decision.
“I think the back-to-back pitches in a weird spot to Gleyber, one of them smoking him, created a lot of emotions,” Hinch said.
Hinch acknowledged that the timing of the pitch, immediately after Raleigh had been hit, made the situation uncomfortable for both teams.
Reuters reported no punches were thrown during the confrontation.
Major League Baseball could review the sequence before deciding whether additional discipline is warranted.
DINGLER HOMERS AFTER BENCHES CLEAR
Detroit responded immediately after play resumed.
Dillon Dingler hit a two-run homer off Eduard Bazardo, cutting Seattle’s lead to 3-2 and briefly giving the Tigers momentum after the confrontation.
The Mariners answered in the bottom of the eighth when Colt Emerson hit a solo home run, restoring their two-run advantage. Andrés Muñoz retired Detroit in order during the ninth to earn his 20th save.
Seattle had taken the lead in the sixth when Julio Rodríguez hit a three-run homer following two scoreless trips through the batting order.
Detroit starter Drew Anderson threw 3⅔ scoreless innings before the Tigers turned the game over to their bullpen.
TIGERS AND MARINERS ADD ANOTHER HEATED CHAPTER
The two clubs entered the series fighting for American League postseason position while moving in opposite directions around the trade deadline.
Detroit recently dealt ace Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Seattle added players in an attempt to strengthen its playoff roster.
The clubs already shared recent history after their five-game 2025 ALDS matchup. Wednesday’s hit batters and benches-clearing confrontation added a fresh layer of animosity.
Detroit’s loss ended its four-game winning streak after the Tigers opened the series with an 8-0 victory Tuesday.
The series concludes Thursday afternoon with both teams trying to leave Seattle with a victory and without another confrontation.
