In front of 29,346 people at Progressive Field Cleveland set an AL mark with their 21st straight win Wednesday surpassing the 2002 Money Ball Athletics with a 5-3 win over the hapless Tigers.
Hapless in the sense that since we’re talking streaks here, the Tribe’s 21st consecutive victory came at the expense of Detroit‘s fifth straight loss moving their record in the month of September to a comedic 2-11. In fact the Tigers’ last set of back-to-back victories came all the way back in the beginning of August when they rattled off four-straight wins between the Yankees and Orioles.
Moreover though Cleveland owes the Tigers a bit of gratitude for their own record setting wins streak.
During that stretch of 20 games, the Tribe beat the Tigers a total of seven times getting swept at home in a four-game set (including a double-header) between September 1st and 3rd and this latest traveling side show down at Progressive. To make matters worse, during those seven games, Cleveland managed to outscore the Tigers 47-8.
As for the Tribe, over the course of their record setting run they’ve only trailed four of the 189 innings played which is incredibly remarkable. Meanwhile their starters have gone 19-0 with a 1.70 ERA and have outscored their opponents 139-35.
In terms of what’s next for Cleveland, the AL Central is essentially in the bag as they hold a 13.5 game lead over the Twins with their magic number down to four. The Tribe – who matched the 1935 Cubs for the second-longest winning streak since 1900 – have only the 1916 New York Giants to surpass who managed to go 26 games without a loss. That streak however did include a tie.
