The Tigers announced Tuesday that they have agreed to terms with James McCann, a catcher out of the University of Arkansas who was their first selection in the 2011 MLB Draft.

The Tigers selected McCann in the second round after surrendering their first round pick to the Boston Red Sox. This came as a result of signing Type-A free agent Victor Martinez this past off-season.

McCann hit .306 (64-for-209) with 14 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 38 RBIs in 61 games last season as a junior at Arkansas.  In addition he was also a semifinalist for the 2011 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award, which is given each year to the top collegiate catcher.

The Tigers have now 31 of their 49 picks from this year’s draft under contract.
