The Tigers may need to add a third-base coach to their shopping list this offseason.
Red Sox team president Larry Lucchino told WCVB-TV in Boston that Tigers third base coach Gene Lamont is the current front-runner for Boston’s managerial vacancy after he interviewed for the position this past Saturday. Lamont emerged as the front-runner after Dale Sveum, was reportedly offered the Chicago Cub’s managerial role Wednesday.
The Red Sox are also considering Torey Lovullo, Pete Mackanin and Sandy Alomar Jr for the position however it is Lamont managerial experience that has made him a favorite for the job.
In addition to Lamont, the Red Sox may also consider Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon.
Now even though McClendon isn’t included in the first batch of candidates for the Red Sox, he could emerge as a candidate if Boston opens up more interviews for he job. McClendon has compiled a 336-446 (.430) record in four-plus seasons with the Pirates (2001-05) and according to James Schmehl of Mlive.com has expressed a desire to return to managing. He did interview for the Seattle managing position last October however that job ended up going to former Indians skipper Eric Wedge. McClendon was however considered the clear runner-up.
