To offset the loss of Ivan Nova and the anticipated loss of CC Sabathia, the Yankees struck a deal acquiring right-handed starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy from the Diamondbacks for pitcher Vidal Nuno.

Hopefully though Yankees fans aren’t expecting the same McCarthy who pitched very well for the A’s back in 2011 and 2012. This season for the Diamondbacks McCarthy has been pretty awful posting a 4.75 ERA (80 ERA+) in 244 2/3 innings since signing a two-year, $15.5M deal with Arizona in 2013. His success in Oakland could’ve been attributed the Coliseum being one of the more friendly hitter ballparks in the league. That’s certainly not the case in Arizona and definitely not the case in New York.
Either way the Yankees didn’t give up a whole lot. Nuno has a 4.78 ERA (84 ERA+) in 98 career major league innings with 17 of those innings coming in relief. He (Nuno) is expected to join the Diamondbacks’ rotation this week while the team presumably begins what’s expected to be a pretty big fire sale under the direction of Tony La Russa.
