The USMNT fails to qualify for the World Cup after stunning loss to Trinidad and Tobago

For the first time since 1986, the United States won’t be competing in the World Cup.

Tuesday night the USMNT was eliminated from World Cup competition after a shocking 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago. Panama’s winning goal in the final seconds against Costa Rica also helped sink the World Cup hopes for the United States. This in some ways was thanks to a phantom tying goal in the Panama/Costa Rica game in which the ball didn’t actually cross the line.

Honduras also secured their own spot in the Wold Cup after their win over Mexico.

To make matters worse for the 28th-ranked USMNT, as it turns out they only needed a draw tonight against the 99th ranked Trinidad and Tobago squad based on the results of the other CONCACAF contests. This was apparently however an insurmountable task considering the United States’ 2-0 deficit.
